Boracay Bumming by Ann Cartera

boracayBumming around takes a different definition in Boracay, that famous island with a white beach that seems to stretch endlessly. In fact, you can claim that you have never bummed so hard than in Boracay. There, you can walk barefoot and aimlessly but never lacking in the things that you have to try, shops and resorts to peek into, the people to meet and the places to visit. Not to mention the unspeakable, unwrite-able thrills.

Carpe Diem is the motto and it begins the moment you take off on a bangka ride from Caticlan. As the island takes shape and you find out that the beach is flour-white and the water crystal clear, you discover that Boracay already has you under its spell. It is a world all its own.

White Beach is lined with many resorts, shops, restaurants and what-nots, subtly hidden from view with palm fronds serving as windbreakers. As it was not peak season the last time I was there with a friend and a cousin, it was easy to get a room with a decent bed and private bath for an unbelievable P200 a day. That’s a bargain considering that the hostel is only a few meters away from White Beach and the rest of bumming humanity.

“What do we do?” is of course a very stupid question in Boracay. Your vacationing, bumming senses are accosted with invitations for a banana boat ride (now, don’t be subliminal) from dark-skinned men, scuba diving lessons, island hopping or biking. On your own and since you don’t have that much money to spare, plain sightseeing serves as appetizer.

Just walking from one end of the beach to the other can be classified as “bumming hard.” Boracay is a mini United Nations – from a Greek Restaurant to a British pub to a Korean Disco. There’s no way you can pass up the talipapa or a stretch of shops that offer a variety of goods and “lessons” nor can you walk past a resort or hotel without taking a long look at its design and there are so many of them.

My favorite activity in Boracay is simply finding a nice spot in some obscure restaurant that faces the beach and watch people of different colors and persuasions pass by. People watching should be turned into a sport in Boracay but it can get annoying when there are too many of them they actually start to look like ants doing head banging.

As if the island itself is not fun enough, some party people have devised ways to make Boracay truly hedonistic. You’ll never be the same again if you attend those Full Moon parties, beach discos or the simple sporting events that display beauty and brawn. And oh, the bar “thrills” are something writers are hard put to transfer into paper or screen. Your imagination is fine enough.

Boracay still has many natural spots that have yet to be discovered but the more accessible ones can be fodder for recreation. Take a trek to the Bat Cave but don’t attempt to get in on your own or maybe bum harder at Puka Beach or simply marvel at the other side of Boracay with its many coves and islets. Daring ones can hie off for scuba diving trips or rent sailboats.  The list of things to do is endless.

I told you, you’ll never bum so hard as you do in Boracay.
